Quality will Be A Benchmark in AMU, says Dr Yechale Kebede

Academic Affairs Vice President, Dr Yechale Kebede, replying to a volley of queries on new academic year, said this year, quality will be AMU’s prime focus as it will revamp service delivery and make our graduates competent and hot property in the job market. Hence, we don’t hanker for numbers but for quality and timely intervention will standardize teaching-learning to make AMU an institution of great repute where students from across the world continue to build their academic future.

 

On the level of preparedness, Dr Yechale informed that AMU is continually increasing programs and different curriculums that have been primarily curated on market’s demand to serve the interest of society. This year AMU may get 6,148 new entrants in addition to existing seniors and UG regular students’ figure is to be around 20,000 plus that will put overall enrolments to over 35,000.

 

On ensuring quality, he said, our deliver-ology unit is identifying lacuna and emphasizing appropriate trainings for students to get hands-on knowledge in industry and externship trainings for teachers to get the level of competence enhanced so that they can mold students into the most productive citizen.

This year, around 200 staff is expected to undergo Higher Diploma Program training and get equipped with correct teaching methodology. The issue of English language skill for teachers and students will be dealt with and ongoing Tracer Study to reveal status of graduates’ employability, so that our programs further will be fine-tuned for market needs to make our graduate thoroughly professional, he averred.

 

It’s learnt despite fiscal crisis AMU’s annual budgetary allocation is increasing, of which teaching-learning as usual got lion’s share; potential pillars research, community service and administrative affairs have also got their portions reasonably increased to achieve their respective goals.

 

Reacting to advisory from education ministry to adopt austerity measure, he said, we have always been told to use resource judiciously and in fact, we have to evolve an effective system that will guide people on optimal use of resources. Other areas of focus, he adds students have to engage in community service and participate in problem-solving research undertakings to serve the society.

 

Revealing about new programs, he said, College of Agricultural Sciences has launched two BSc programs i.e. Food Science & Post-Harvest Technology and Aqua Culture, Fishery, Wetland & Wildlife Management; three Masters such as MSc in Plant Breeding, Dairy Science & Technology and Veterinary Epidemiology; three new PhDs i.e. Animal Production, Soil and Water Management and Horticulture.

Subsequently, Water Technology Institute has also launched 4 PhDs in Ground Water Engineering, Hydraulic Engineering, Water & Environmental Engineering and Geo-Informatics & Earth Observation for Hydrology. Institute of Technology has added one more PhD in Computing & Information Technology and two Masters in Architecture and Urban Design and Sustainable Development.

 

Adhering to Ministry of Education’s new guidelines recruitment at national level will be carried out and soon graduate assistants, lecturers, assistant professors and professors will be employed, he maintained.

 

The corresponding progress of global collaborations requires serious follow-up, he said, at certain level we are moving further, but much more has to be done; and in the offing, AMU is likely to ink MoU with one of German universities in the area of Anthropology.

 

To achieve gender equity, all departments have been instructed to give priority to female staff including our own promising graduates; we will build their capacities further. Though, short of required numbers in this regard, in future, we will reach there. In-house scholarships will continue to support students from this catchment areas, he revealed.

HIV/AIDS Reproductive Health and Life-Skill course have certainly done good to AMU students. It helped everyone across the board to have right perspective of the issues and be responsible in their personal conduct so that their lives are not imperiled.

 

Expressing contentment, he said, when turmoil gripped almost all institutions last year, AMU Management closely coordinated with local authority, Students’ Council and Peace Forum to successfully complete the calendar. However, purchase of educational materials remains an issue, may be due inadequate Forex reserve, etc. Hence, I urge entire university community to work hard to achieve desired goal.
