College of Medicine (CoM) Recruitment 2019

MAC-CDAC is a research unit under the College of Medicine that works with Ministry of health, Iocal and international health agencies to address priority health problems in Malawi and the SADC region through operational and evidence synthesis research, capacity building and training, health care systems strengthening, disease surveillance, and monitoring and impact evaluation in communicable diseases including malaria, HIV, vaccine preventable diseases and Neglected tropical diseases.

We are currently looking for an individual to support entomological field activities for a sub-study under the Partnership for Increasing the Impact of Vector Control (PIIVEC) project. The sub-study seeks to better understand mosquito behaviours and estimate human-vector contact in southern Malawi by conducting mosquito and population-based surveys.

ENTOMOLOGY FIELD WORKER (Blantyre) -1 POST

SUMMARY

The Entomology Field Worker will conduct mosquito field surveys for identification, collection and classification of malaria vectors. The successful candidate will be responsible for data collection, analysis and report writing_ The Entomology Field Worker will be based at the Malaria Alert Centre.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Prepare all mosquito surveillance equipment and supplies prior to field activities.
  • Participate in the collection of mosquito samples in the field.
  • Operate different mosquito traps including backpack aspirators and light traps.
  • Label and store field mosquito samples.
  • Sort, identify and prepare mosquito specimens for appropriate laboratory testing.
  • Conduct ovary dissections of mosquitoes.
  • Perform data entry in hard copy and electronic format.
  • Adhere to Standard Operational Procedures for all research activities.
  • Assist with data analysis and generate reports for internal use.
  • Ensure proper maintenance of equipment.
  • Undertake any other duties assigned by the project Pl.

EXPERIENCE, COMPETENCIES AND EDUCATION:

Applicants must possess the following:

  • Diploma in Biological sciences, entomology or other health related field.
  • At least one (1) year of experience in vector biology research projects is an added advantage.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Working knowledge of MS Office (MS Word and Excel). Experience with data entry is an added advantage.
  • Ability to follow written instructions on experimental Standard Operating Procedures.
  • Demonstrated ability to work as a member of a team.
  • Work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Must be prepared to work odd hours when required.

REMUNERATION:

The positions will attract a salary with benefits commensurate with experience and qualifications as applicable to contract staff in the College of Medicine
