College of Medicine (CoM) Recruitment 2019

The Helse Nord Tuberculosis Initiative (HNTI) is a collaborative programme between the College of Medicine (CoM), the Malawi-Liverpool-Wellcome Trust Clinical Research Programme (MLW) and the Helse Nord RHF of the University of Tromso in Norway.
The aim of the HNTI is to support collaborative and multidisciplinary tuberculosis (TB) research within the CoM with the long-term goal of building local scientific research capacity that is sustainable, internationally excellent and that makes a direct contribution to local and international TB diagnostic capacity, control policy and practice.

Two high-quality individuals are required to work full-time on various projects in the MLW-COM tuberculosis laboratory. The candidate must have ability to quickly learn new laboratory tests and techniques. One Medical Research Laboratory Technologist will be required to commence duties as soon as possible, while the other will be expected to commence duties in six months.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES 

  • Write study and test specific laboratory SOPs
  • Perform laboratory tests following written SOPs
  • Maintain routine laboratory Quality Control and Patient Specimen logs.
  • Monitor established levels of supplies and inventory, to include, but not limited to instrument reagents and QC materials.
  • Participate in instrument calibration as instructed by Lab Supervisors
  • Participate in scheduled and unscheduled proficiency testing, to include, but not limited to, external regulatory and internal blind samples.
  • Uphold effective communication with laboratory and site personnel, to include, but not limited to nursing staff, lab management, and site project coordinators.
  • Any other duties as assigned by the Assistant Lab Manager, Lab Supervisors, or Designee.
  • Attend study meetings—including international conference calls
  • Maintaining a strong working relationship with other labs including, the Malawi-Liverpool-Wellcome Trust, and COM Departments.

QUALIFICATION

  • BSc in Medical Laboratory Sciences, those with credit or above have added advantage.

GENERAL ATTRIBUTES

The ideal candidate should have the following attributes:

  • Excellent oral and written skills in English.
  • Good computer skills including internet, email, and MS Office proficiency.
  • Interested in clinical or public health research.
  • Good interpersonal skills and the ability to work in a team.
  • Able to consistently follow procedures and systems put in place.
  • Good problem identification and solving skills.
