College of Medicine Recruitment 2019

The College of Medicine has been contracted by the International Training and Education Center for Health (I-TECH) of the University of Washington, USA, with funding from the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), to conduct an observational birth defects surveillance study (BDS) in four hospitals: Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital in Blantyre, Bwaila Hospital in Lilongwe, Ntcheu District Hospital and Mangochi District Hospital. The aim of BDS is to establish and implement a birth defects surveillance system and estimate prevalence of birth defects at the aforementioned hospitals and 2) to conduct a nested case-control study to examine the association of maternal use of antiretroviral treatment (ART) and birth defects in the four hospitals.

Applications are invited from interested and qualified candidates for the post of Research Assistant for the study.

Job Summary

To facilitate accurate and complete capturing of study patients according to the study protocol through ensuring that each and every birth occurring at the health facility has been documented and assessed.

Key Responsibilities

Technical

  • Keeping detailed numbers of admissions and deliveries of newborns in the health facility from all relevant units of the facility on a daily basis

  • Ensuring that no mothers coming to labour ward and other delivery points for deliveries are missed in the study register using study and labour ward registers

  • Finding missed study participants in the health facility prior to discharge as necessary

  • Facilitating HTC for study participants with Unknown HIV status

  • Liaising with the nurses in finding out babies born with birth defects

  • Preparing a weekly report for admissions and deliveries

  • Make plans for accounting and reconciliation of deliveries on a daily basis

  • Maintain coherent records of daily activity and provide updates as requested by the line manager

  • Explain protocols to patients who were missed for surveillance activities prior to data being captured from patients by study midwives

  • Will be requested to perform other reasonable tasks at the request of scientific leader, site coordinator or PI consistent with their level of training and responsibility.

Administrative

  • Assisting the Site Nurse Manager in ordering and accounting study supplies at the study site

  • Assisting the Site Nurse Manager in collating and compiling data on screening, enrolment and follow-up processes for submission to the Program Coordinator

  • To participate in regular study team meetings to evaluate and plan study activities

Qualifications and Requirements

  • A minimum of Diploma in Public Health or Community Development.

  • Health research experience

  • Possession of GCP certificate (desirable)
