Children of the Nations is a duly registered NGO in Malawi with a mission to raise children who transform Nations. It partners with nationals to provide Christ-centered care for orphaned and destitute children, enabling them to create a positive and lasting change in their nations.

In order to fulfil its vision effectively and excellently, a rare opportunity has risen to engage qualified person of Malawian origin to fill a position tenable at its head office in Lilongwe. COTN therefore, invites applications from suitable candidates to fill the position on a two year contract — renewable upon successful performance appraisals and availability of funds.

The following Job Position is available at Children of the Nations:

International Christian Academy (ICA) Principal.

Main Purpose of the position

To partner with the COTN-MW Education Coordinator in providing quality education at International Christian Academy by ensuring successful implementation of teaching and learning programs, Education standards of services, education goals and budgets, education policies and practices and providing leadership and strategic direction for the academy. The Principal shall be required to understand the nature and purpose of COTN education and know that his or her paramount responsibility is to establish and sustain the COTN identity of the School and safeguard the COTN vision. The Principal shall model best teaching approaches by taking minimal teaching load per week.

Main Duties and Responsibilities 

  • Implement the Malawi secondary curriculum for grades 9 up to 12 (form 1- 4) according to COTN learning expectations, and a spiritual curriculum for COIN spiritual care programs such as Life Launch for High School graders.
  • Form skills, attitudes and behaviors among students in line with National Education Sector Plans, goals and expectations developed by the Ministry of Education Science and Technology.
  • Teach subjects of specialty in order to model to the other teachers the best learner centered teaching strategies.
  • Ensure the academy is increasingly becoming financially more sustainable by putting ICA resources to the most economical, effective and efficient use.
  • Create and implement a strict school discipline policy that includes promoting student leadership and responsibility, empowering an English speaking community of students and staff, and active parental participation through PTA meetings.
  • Ensure development and implementation of student handbook, teacher code of conduct, school motto, and strategic goals or objectives for purposes of guiding appropriate expectations, and also build a culture of English speaking and intense student competition.
  • Partner with Education Coordinator and other COIN staff to enroll students into the school on 50:50 minimum ratio for COTN and community students, where COTN sponsored students are given priority treatment.
  • Partner with Education Coordinator to develop an effective student enrollment policy, student attendance policy, and community involvement plan for ICA.
  • Ensure attainment of the highest quality of education by strictly upholding Education standards of Service such as 40 learners per class, effective advance planning for each lesson, schemes and records of work, time tables, Education Calendars.
  • Ensure teachers always employ learner centered teaching approaches in the planning and implementation of all lessons to highest student engagement.
  • Ensure formative and summative assessments are planned for and implemented in the school.
  • Supervise teacher’s work through schemes and records of work, lesson plans and period registers.
  • Planning and reporting end of topic tests, monthly tests, end of term tests and end of year exams.
  • Represent ICA in COTN Technical Team meetings and Education Departmental meetings at National Office level.
  • Plan and conduct ICA staff monthly meetings, and review meetings.
  • Create and implement an effective mentorship program for both COTN sponsored children and paying students where all teachers/staff understand and participate in the extra teacher roles regarding holistic care approach of raising children from troubled backgrounds.
  • Ensure spiritual growth of both learners and staff in a Christ-centered environment; to demonstrate a vibrant and authentic faith in the Lord Jesus Christ.
  • Help the Education Coordinator in Managing the Academy’s grants and projects, and create a fundraising and resources mobilization plan for increased sustainability of the COTN Education programs.
  • Model effective communication strategies with all COTN staff and stakeholders interacting with the academy in order to foster an increasingly competitive national and international image for the Academy.
  • Create annual goals, budgets and plans for fees collection to increasingly subsidize on COTN.
  • Ensure that records and files for all ICA staff and learners are created and well managed.
  • Attend outside-of-school events and meetings with parents, PTA and stakeholders which can extend work well beyond 40 hours per week.
  • Take lead in orienting and upholding COIN policies, standards among ICA teachers or staff.
  • Develop yearly performance Management Plans, interim and year end reviews for ICA staff.
  • Create and share weekly updates, monthly reports, term reports, annual reports to the National Education Coordinator.
  • Help the National Education Coordinator in managing Education Global Volunteers, venture teams, interns and all staff working with the Academy.

Skills, Qualifications and Experience

  • Excellent communication skills, able to effectively model the best leadership practices.
  • Experience and ability to work in a flexible and cross cultural environment.
  • Emotionally stable, strategically mature and able to hold intellectual deliberations.
  • Spiritually mature, honest, transparent and able to keep confidentiality of critical office details.
  • Minimum of a Bachelors Degree in Education Science with more than 5 years teaching experience, and another 2 years working as school Principal/ Secondary School Head Teacher with proven competency and highly competitive evidence based MSCE exam results.
  • Those with a Master’s Degree in Education and experience in implementing an international High School curriculum might have an added advantage.
  • Experience on implementing child protection policy and working with children from troubled backgrounds.
  • Must be born again Christian who demonstrates a vibrant and authentic faith in Jesus Christ.
  • Ability to transfer knowledge.
  • Passion for each child to reach his or her fullest potential through quality education.
  • Commitment to Christ with a servant’s heart of leadership.
