The World Agroforestry Centre (ICRAF) seeks to recruit a National Land PKS Coordination Officer who will be a member of the World Agroforestry Centre (ICRAF) team.

General: The World Agroforestry Centre (also known as the International Centre for Research in Agroforestry-ICRAF) is an independent research institution which generates science-based knowledge about the complex role trees play in agricultural landscapes and rural livelihoods. As part of the Centre’s work to bring tree-based solutions to bear on poverty and environmental problems, researchers – working in close collaboration with partners – are developing new technologies, tools and policy recommendations for increased food security and ecosystem health. The Centre’s headquarters are located in Nairobi, Kenya, and research is conducted in more than 30 countries in Africa, Asia and Latin America. Key Responsibilities:

·         Nationally coordinate the LandPKS activities within the country;

·         Conduct trainings and facilitate workshops for farmers, extension workers, development professionals, and researchers on use of the LandPKS mobile app;

·         Facilitate and Train national/regional land use planners on the use of the Land Capability Classification tool of the LandPKS mobile app and integrate the Land Capability Classification tool into existing national/regional land use planning methods, protocols, and processes;

·         Provide detailed explanations about the relevance of LandPKS data and results to sustainable land management, including the importance of monitoring vegetation change over time for conservation efforts and rangeland conservation, as well as the relationship between soil characteristics and agricultural productivity;

·         Conduct user feedback assessments with the different user groups (farmers, extension, development, researchers) in order to identify issues and development priorities;

·         Identify additional regional (yield and erosion) datasets that can be used in cloud-computing algorithms that can improve LandPKS outputs;

·         Develop additional, country-specific training and outreach materials in the primary language of the country where located;

·         Lead translation efforts of the LandPKS mobile app into the primary language(s) of the country where located;

·         Assist LandPKS Global Coordinator with additional coordination tasks, including but not limited to supporting outreach and training activities in other pilot countries in Africa that do not have a country coordinator;

·         Identify and, in consultation with Global Coordinator, pursue additional opportunities to support adoption and use of LandPKS to support land use and management decision making. This includes identifying new organizations or groups to adopt LandPKS, and leading communication, trainings, and coordination with these new user groups;

·         Identify and work with Global Coordinator to integrate local and national sources of land management information into the LandPKS mobile app, including determining the soil, climate and topographic conditions where they are appropriate, and consult with local and national experts, including successful farmers, extension workers and researchers, to ensure that the information provided is the best available;

·         Develop effective communication strategies and prepare periodic reports, extension and training materials including worksheets, handouts, calibrated soil samples, vegetation types, brief, and field guide manuals.

Education:

¨       At least BSc degree or MSc degree in related field, professional certification

Experience:

¨       A minimum of 5 years’ experience in Land Management, Soil sciences or related fields for BSc or 2 years of relevant work experience for Masters’ degree 

Skills:

¨       Ability to effectively train a wide variety of people on use of LandPKS (software + texture)

¨       Familiarity with development and relevant research techniques in the subject matter

¨       Ability to provide feedback on model outputs and troubleshoot Android issues

¨       Ability to plan work and multi-task

¨       Computer literacy i.e. knowledge in MS Office and good writing skill in both Amharic and English

¨       Ability to analyze data and prepare progress records and reports

¨       Flexible on work hours including travel and extended field work

¨       Follows policies and procedures

¨       Aware of impact of own work

Grade: 2D

Minimum Base: Birr 24,572.00 (Negotiable depending on experience, skill and salary history of the candidate)

Terms of appointment:  This is a Nationally Recruited Staff (NRS) position, initial appointment is for one year with the possibility of renewal, contingent upon individual performance and the availability of funding.
