The Legume Best Bets IV project titled “Farmer Research Networks and Multi Environmental Trials for Soil Health, Productivity of Maize-legume Farming Systems and Livelihoods” funded by The Mc Knight Foundation Collaborative Crop Research Program is looking for one highly qualified student to pursue PhD programme in Crop and Soil Sciences at Bunda Campus, Lilongwe University of Agriculture and Natural Resources (LUANAR).

Areas of Research:
The research is focussing on maize-legume farming systems under smallholder farms in different environments. The research is aimed at identifying technologies that contribute to resilient farming systems, soil health, crop productivity and rural livelihoods in Kasungu, Mzimba and Ntcheu Districts. Potential candidate will focus on developing evaluation the effect of diversified legume technologies on soil health and crop productivity. The study will built on activities under the long term on-farm multi-environmental trials (METs) on diversified maize- legume systems being implemented in the three districts.

Application Requirements

Qualified Malawian candidates should have a Master of Science degree in Agronomy with a strong background in relevant courses in Agronomy and must have a GPA of not less than 3.0. Selection of candidates will be based upon the merit of the transcript submitted, strength of CV, quality of concept note. The application package must include the following:
• Certified copy of your first degree certificate
• Certified copy of your MSc degree certificate
• Certified copy of your MSc degree transcript
• Concept note focusing on the areas provided above (2-3 pages maximum)
• Curriculum Vitae
• Three references from qualified referees

Assistantship Support

The support provides research expenses based on the budget, tuition fees and student upkeep based on academic standing and research progress.

Period of the scholarship

The period of the scholarship is three years. The successful candidate should therefore make sure that studies are completed within three years.

Expected Outputs

Duties will first and foremost be to conduct novel research on Multi-Environmental Trials to identify context specific soil health options. The student will be expected to produce a thesis, publish journal article, present research findings in scientific fora, locally and globally, and support use of research outputs by researchers within the project. The candidate will help to coordinate research activities in the project areas in Ntcheu, Kasungu and Mzimba.
