Introduction

The Malawi Liverpool-Wellcome (MLW) Programme (http://www.mlw.medcol.mw) is an internationally recognised centre for research and research training, funded by the Wellcome Trust. In collaboration with the University of Malawi, College of Medicine (COM), MLW would like to engage the services of a competent and dynamic individual to work in m exciting Research Programme (DRUM) at the MLW Research facility as it is expanding.

Social Science Junior Research Assistant 1 post, based in Blantyre (initial 2 year contract with potential for further extensions)

Job Summary

The DRUM project, led by the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine, is looking fora motivated, independent and analytical social scientist to lead the social science component of the research in Malawi. The post holder will be experienced in social research in health and will be keen to pursue a research career.

The DRUM Social Science Study In Malawi, social science research will explore antibiotic use amongst people living and working in urban and peri-urban Blantyre. It will also explore ‘What constitutes Good Antimicrobial Use?’ amongst patients, health workers, public health practitioners, policy makers and scientists. The fieldwork is expected to last 12-18 months and will consist primarily of ethnography, including observations, interviews and documentary reviews. The social science team will consist of the Social Science Study Lead, and a small field team. They will be expected to integrate with the other DRUM research themes. The social science study team will be supported by social scientists based at Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine and the Malawi-Liverpool-Wellcome Trust. The role will include international travel including to Liverpool.

Key responsibilities

• Recruiting and managing a small social science research team in Malawi.
• Developing and delivering high quality social science research within the projectremit.
• Working in close liaison with social scientists at LSTM and MLW throughout the research process.
• Working in close liaison with the clinical and laboratory science teams of the DRUM study in
• Carrying out appropriate pre-fieldwork activities including sensitisation, liaison with ethical review boards, training of other members of the social science research team.
• Carrying out fieldwork to a high standard including periods of ethnographic fieldwork.
• Carrying out analysis of findings and drafting of reports and manuscripts for publication in peer reviewed journals.

Minimum Credentials

• Undergraduate level degree, should be in anthropology. sociology or another social science.
• Experience of teaching/or carrying out research using ethnographic research methods (at least 2 years)
• Experience of interviewing a range of actors (at least 2 years)
• Experience carrying out analysis of qualitative data (at least 2 projects)
• Experience writing protocols for qualitative research (at least 1 project)
• Experience acquiring and maintaining ethical approval for qualitative research locally (at least 1 project)
• Experience of writing project outputs (at least 1 project)
• Experience working in multi disciplinary teams especially with clinicians and public health practitioners (at least 1 project)
• Excellent English language skills (IELTS or equivalent grade required)
• Experience working with international collaborators (please list name, institution band contact details of 1-2 key collaborators)
• Experience in team leadership (at least 1 year)Additional desirable attributes
• Master’s in anthropology, sociology or another social science
• Experience working in infectious diseases research.
• Experience researching medicines use.
• Experience writing and maintaining Standard Operating Procedures for qualitative research activities including fieldwork and data security.
• Experience using qualitative data analysis software such as NVivo,
• Experience with recruiting social science staff
