MALAWI INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY

  1. Effective Business Development & Entrepreneurship Skills

Final Award: Certificate in Entrepreneurship and Business Development

Aim: The aim of this training is to equip participants with entrepreneurial skills by challenging them to generate ideas and develop business proposals that can be turned into practical and commercially successful ventures.

Learning Outcomes:

Participants will be able to:

  1. Demonstrate knowledge gained by developing a comprehensive business plan/proposal;
  2. Examine ways in which business ideas can be turned into practical ventures;
  3. Develop a comprehensive business plan or proposal worthy of implementation (applicability);
  4. Conceptualize and develop a comprehensive PowerPoint presentation worthy of presenting to a funding source or corporate leadership.

Indicative Content: Meaning of entrepreneurship; difference between ordinary business and entrepreneurship; Identifying creative and innovative business  ideas; Writing a Business Plan for a business start-up; Writing a Business Plan to attract investors; Effectively marketing a business proposal using PowerPoint (pitching).

Target Participants: Individuals aspiring to become successful entrepreneurs, trainers in entrepreneurship and business development, and Community Development Officers. Women in small and medium businesses are encouraged to apply.

Aim: The aim of this training is to introduce and refresh researchers, data officers, data managers, academics, health professionals, Engineers, Environmentalist, and social scientists in both public and private sectors on sophisticated statistical packages of STATA and R for data management and analysis.

  1. Introduction to Geographic Information System (GIS) Using QGIS, the Leading Free and Open Source Desktop GIS

Aim: The aim of this training is to teach participants GIS basics, concepts and applications and provide them a hands-on experience of handling geospatial data using QGIS software.

Learning Outcomes:          

Participants will be able to:

  1. Understand the nature, components and capabilities of GIS
  2. Expose participants to working with GIS tabular data in QGS software
  3. Expose participants to spatial data capture, input, manipulation and display using QGIS software
  4. Create and analyse spatial data in QGIS

  6. Participants will be able to design quality GIS information products

  2. Identify vector overlay analysis techniques and apply them in spatial problem solving
  3. Identify elements of vector data analysis for creating a site selection model
  4. Apply method of proximity analysis for buffering elements

Aim: The aim of this training is to equip the participants with skills of becoming better speakers as they will discuss and practise ways of adapting speech for different occasions and audiences, ways of selecting and organising material in preparation for a speech, ways of utilizing non-verbal cues in presentation as well as management of stress and anxiety when making a speech.

ACADEMY OF MEDICAL SCIENCES

1.Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)

Final Award: Certificate in Emergency Care

Aim: The aim of this training is to equip the participants with knowledge, skills and attitudes necessary for them to provide immediate temporary treatment carried out in cases of emergency, sudden illness or accident prior to the arrival of a nurse or doctor or the transportation of the patient to hospital. Emphasis is placed on saving life, prevent illness or injury from becoming worse and to relieve pain and suffering as far as possible.

Learning Outcomes:          

Participants will be able to:

  1. Gain basic knowledge of cardiovascular system
  2. Gain basic knowledge of respiratory system
  3. Gain basic knowledge on rules for first aid
  4. Describe resuscitation of various emergences
  5. Gain practical skills of chest compressions
  6. Demonstrate skills in chest compressions
  7. Demonstrate skills in assessment of levels of injuries by triaging

Indicative Content: Introduction to first aid and its basic rules of treatment; Shock; Burns and scalds; Choking; Triaging of victims; Importance of CPR; Consent; Communicable diseases; Chain of Survival; Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation flow chart; Epilepsy; Positions; Resuscitation measures: Chest compressions, increased fluid intake; Fractures; Drowning

Dates for all courses are March 25-29, 2022 at the MUST campus in Thyolo. The fee indicated is for each participant and covers training material, lunch and refreshments.
