University Of Malawi International Seminar On Refugee Issues Call For Applications 2019

WUSC is a network of individuals and post-secondary institutions that believe all people are entitled to the knowledge and skills necessary to contribute to a more equitable world. WUSC is a non-governmental organization with a mission: to foster human development and global understanding through education and training. WUSC works to increase the capacity of local organizations, government departments, as well as individuals in their efforts to contribute more effectively to the economic and social welfare of the population. WUSC focuses on increasing access to high-quality education for youth, providing economic opportunities and skills for employment for youth and women. WUSC also works to facilitate leadership, civic engagement, skills development, and empowerment opportunities for youth and women, gender equality, and refugee issues. In Malawi, WUSC is implementing the following programs: Volunteer Program and Student Refugee Program (SRP).

WUSC in collaboration with partners in hosting the Uniterra International Seminar on Refugee Issues in Malawi to be held at Dzaleka refugee camp in Dowa during the month of July 2019. We are recruiting five (5) Malawian students from Chancellor College from the Department of Social Sciences to participate in the international seminar. Therefore, WUSC is inviting applications from suitably qualified student candidates to apply as seminar participants. The theme of the International Seminar is “Youth Leadership for Refugee Self Reliance, bringing together Canadians, Malawians and other youth from the great lakes region of Africa living in Malawi.”

Recruitment of Five (5) Malawi Students

Selection Criteria

  • Students must be at least 18 years of age and be Malawian citizen
  • Be a current or recent graduate of Chancellor College with a background in Social Science, International Development, International Relations, and Conflict Studies is an asset
  • Be fluent in English. French is an asset
  • Interest in International Development and global forced migration issues
  • Interest in exploring and discussing barriers that refugees face in the global south
  • Be able to work in a fast-paced environment
  • Demonstrated flexibility and adaptability in new situations
  • Interest in creating cross-cultural connections and networks
  • Strong teamwork skills
  • Demonstrated analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Female students are encouraged to apply
