Under the supervision and in collaboration with the assigned teacher(s) the TA will be assigned specific supportive instructional activities, organizational and management tasks, and clerical and communication tasks.
SPECIFIC ROLES & RESPONSIBILITIES
Support the teacher in developing and delivering structured teaching and learning activities/lessons for individuals, groups or whole classes in the absence of a class teacher
Assist in adjusting activities and providing support according to students; responses during lessons, promotes the inclusion of all pupils in the learning process
In collaboration with the teacher encourages pupils towards mastery of the ICS Learner Profile: to work co-operatively with each other within an established discipline policy, anticipates and manages pupil behavior and promotes self-control and independence, provides feedback for pupils in relation to progress and achievements
Assist in all areas of the teaching and learning environment: Managing the learning spaces including supporting class teachers in class room/PE Setup/set downs, Photocopying and other tasks as required, preparing and presenting displays of students’ work, and any/all general clerical and learning environment management task
Pro-actively communicate with the teacher for the purpose of assisting in evaluating students progress/ behavior/special needs
Actively participate in planning meetings and in team meetings when requested
Attend professional development and faculty meetings on a regular basis
Assist in behavior management under the direction of the teacher
Support in packing and preparing classrooms a few days before the beginning and after the end of school years as determined by the principal
Work with assigned teacher to ensure a safe and purposeful learning environment; selects and prepares resources appropriate to learning activities, taking account of pupil’s interests, language and cultural backgrounds.
Help with school events, trips and activities. Some TAs will participate in Week Without Walls and be required to spend night(s) away from school and Addis.
Keep classroom neat and in order
Support teacher in collection and analysis of learning and behavior data
Enforce school policies and rules
Communicate disciplinary incidents to the teacher and contact parents if requested to do so
Work collaboratively with teacher, parents, and support personnel to improve services for students
Orient and inform new TAs or colleagues
Complete tasks set by the classroom teacher
Be an active member of a Professional Learning Community (PLC)
At the discretion of administration TAs will be requested to work as a substitute in the absence of a teacher.
Participate in meetings, planning and activities from 3:20 to 4:30 each day
All TAs are required to teach one After School Activity (ASA) once per week.
OTHER FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES (depending on duties of the department)
Middle/High School (MS/HS) Specific Responsibilities:
Help teacher prepare materials and assignments for instruction
Reinforce ideas to students by reviewing the course material and helping them with classroom assignments to ensure the students grasp lesson objectives given to them by the main teacher.
Actively uses best practice strategies to support learning: prompting, questioning, chunking and so on
Contributes to the identification and execution of appropriate out-of-school learning activities which consolidate and extend the work carried out in class.
Supports students with emotional or behavioral problems and help develop their social skills and helps teachers track student progress with this development where appropriate
Monitors halls and helps students exit at the end of the day
Provides release time for teachers during advisory or community time as needed
Participates and contributes to team meetings regarding student concern and curriculum planning.
Supervises study hall in a tutor/mentor style
Job Requirements:
MINIMUM EDUCATIONAL QUALIFICATIONS AND PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE REQUIRED
BA degree in related field (First degree in special needs education or psychology is required for SST-TA)
BA in Education (preferred)
EXPERIENCE
Three years working in teaching and learning system out of which at least one year in a classroom setup where s/he has experience of working with children.
KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES AND SKILLS
Have the understanding and the experience in positive classroom management & discipline procedures
Have the skill to support students with emotional or behavioral problems and helps develop their social skills.
Ability to manage children and cope with challenging behavior
Ability to build good relationship with children, teachers and parents
Effective communication skills
Basic computer skills
Be a proactive problem solver in addressing student and teacher needs
Be able to make decisions that are routine in nature with clearly defined procedures.
Be able to work under general supervision while independently, proactively completing routine assignments, and asking questions when instructions are unclear, new, or difficult.
Be able to communicate effectively, with good English, with parents as delegated.
Be able to model and promote collaborative work
Able to treat students, teachers and any other staff in a professional and respectful manner
Expected in keeping identified students’ evaluation progresses and records confidential.
